Unfortunately… I chose McDonalds today! I just inhaled half a Double Filet O’ Fish burger with wasabi fries for lunch. And now… I’m feeling kinda slow and greasy all over… yuck… Brrr… should have listened to my inner voice and stuck to the healthy eating. Doh! Meanwhile… checkout Mrawz – I’m kinda likin’ it.
It’s my favorite season in Singapore! Durian Season! Yummy yum yum! Unfortunately, my dear poifriends don’t seem to agree. Whoops…
I recently exchanged a pair of my spare sock pois for this lovely book from Elizabeth Gilbert. Best barter trade I’ve done in awhile now.
The book is an undeniably good read, but what surprised me most was the warmth and honesty of this woman’s voice. To me, this book speaks more about hope, light, and the beauty of Life more than any of those sickly sweet Chicken Soup for the Soul types stories.
But the thing that really struck a chord with me was the conversation that she has with a character named Richard, who defines the term soul mate in his own terms.
“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that’s holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life. A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down you walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then they leave. Thank God for it.”
I couldn’t agree more. I believe that I’ve glimpsed into that mirror of a soul mate who has come and gone, who has revealed and challenged my ideals about love and life, and who has definitely sparked a change in me (for the better I hope). And now I wonder… will you meet more than one soul mate in this lifetime?
Am shamelessly doing a plug for All Natural Kitchen, a food stall that my friend Kenneth has opened in recent months at Amoy Street Food Center, Chinatown.
It’s a nifty little stall and what can I say, the chef makes provisions for part-time vegetarians like myself with his slew of random vegetarian dishes. Yes. Watch out for ‘em oven roasted pumpkin, carrots and more! Slluurrrppp…
i eat i shoot i post has done a wonderful little review of Kenny’s food, and has even listed him as a Hawker Hunk! All Natural Kitchen is located at #02-110, Amoy Street Food Center, Singapore.
I am in heaven. Sweet delicious heaven. After a two year three month wait… I’ve finally had the most delicious breakfast in the world in the comfort of my office. Ladies and gentlemen… its Soy Chai Latte & Crumpets. Tea leaves and spices from T2 Tea, froth with Pacific Soy Milk, and of course… GOLDEN CRUMPETS! Flown in with love from Melbourne (many thanks to Emarson, my colleague for bringing them back with him). You have no idea how hard it is to assemble all of these Aussie ingredient here in Singapore man… but… right now… I am in heaven. Sweet delicious heaven.

It has been an awesome weekend. Friday night farewell drinks for McG at Timbre@The Substation lasted well into the night and we had a blast. The coverband, 53A, happily obliged our request for ‘Sweet Child of Mine’, our official theme song at work and it was bloody hilarious watching all 12 of us sing our little hearts out to the amazement of the rest of the patrons at Timbre.
Trooped off to Ashtanga Yoga Singapore for a really beautiful practice early this morning. Wasn’t particularly impressive or anything… BUT! I held my headstand for more than 5 seconds before toppling over! Okokok… its a very small feat for many, but I have the worst balance in the world. ever. period. So I was as happy as a clam. Must keep practicing. I have also resolved to start going for morning mysore classes starting this Tuesday. Please let me roll out of bed by 5.30am.
After practice, I bought my usual take-away tub of pumpkin cake from Mei Hong Yuen Desserts (76 Temple Street, Chinatown). Was craving was something sweet and cold, so I got the Waterchestnut Jelly. Was driving along the ECP going “Hmm..Hhmm… This tastes sooo gggoood….”. I mean what could be better? Driving along the highway with the windows down, Sufjan Stevens playing on the stereo, sun on my back and yummy goodness in my mouth. Ahhh…
Headed to Bollywood Veggies for Nigel’s birthday lunch. And it was yummy! My favorite dish was definitely the Papaya Salad
Followed by the yummilicious Banana Bread. All that organic goodness! Slurp! We skipped the organic farm tour at Bollywood Veggies, and decided to head to Qian Hu Ornamental Fish Farm. I don’t know if I fully agree with Qian Hu’s concept of allowing kids to catch fish in their ponds. There were tons of dead fish floating up in the ponds. Could it be the stress of spending your days trying to run away from kids’ nets.
At the end of the day, it was like a mini road-trip in our black, red and gold car convoy, plus we had walkie-talkies so that we could communicate with one another while navigating the small roads in Chua Chu Kang. There was this moment as I was driving home, going down a tiny tree-lined road in the setting sun that I just said to myself, in the words of The Suns, “Its a beautiful day”.
Chinese New Year should really qualify as an extreme sport. I mean we Chinese honestly take it to the extremes when it comes to festivities. There’s way too much food, too many family members, too much gambling, too much swearing, too much house visiting and too many people wearing bright red clothes. Hahha! Well… in all honesty, I really enjoyed the past five days , although I did lose my temper when I found a bunch of my younger cousins tormenting my cats, Mr. Brown and Eva Luna when they visited my house.
Took loads of photos of my dearest family members, you can view the complete album here.
Meanwhile, here are a couple of my favorites:

today, kumar and i headed off to Food #03 for our first foray into raw food cuisine! we left the office armed with a map and trekked our way into Little India. Located on 109 Rowell Road, this month-old cafe has success written all over it with its great service crew, well thought-out vegetarian menu, quirky interior decor and cafe concepts.
the night was a special event with guest chef – Paul Yeoh, a raw food advocate who runs Raw Food Cuisine. our first dish was Endless Oriental Massage Salad and he taught us how to pound a garlic with love, mix our own salad dressing sans olive oil, and how to massage our bak choy to perfection. honestly, what better way to kick off your meal by getting your hands into your own raw food and massaging it till you’re happy?

next we had Rainbow Ramen with Braised Mushrooms. the ramen is made of finely stripped zucchini and those mushrooms were super yum – completely raw! we finished off with Helman’s Apple Pie with Sweet Coconut Cream, and that was my favorite dish of the night for sure. oh yummy yum yum. aside from the raw food, it was a really great evening spent talking to kumar about family, friends, vegetarianism, food and life.
so i think i’m gonna sign up for some raw food classes with Paul Yeoh and whip up a raw feast someday. Any takers to be my guests?
Headed down to a new cafe Food For Thought for lunch with a couple of colleagues. This 3 week-old cafe was absolutely buzzing when we got there! The ambiance was cozy and welcoming, from the service staff to the funny poems scribbled on the chalkboard. Personality was also drizzled onto the names of dishes, ranging from “Aunty Rubiah’s Very Good Brownies” to “Mrs Kang’s Very Durian Cake”. Chef David was also really friendly, and came up to us towards the end of our meal to ask our opinion on some new bread just out from the oven. I really liked the garlic and thyme bread! Cloves of sweet garlic, just stuffed in the middle of the bun, both sweet and savory! This is what we ate today:
I can’t wait to go back for more! I really want to try more of the sandwiches and cakes! Yum! For anybody else who’s interested, Food For Thought is located at: 420 North Bridge Road, North Bridge Centre, #01-06, Singapore 188727
In other news… we decided to empty out our pockets for faceyourpockets.com! Hahah! The premise is this: Empty the contents of pockets onto a scanner bed, place your face next to your objects and scan away! Here are some of ours scans:

Its been a good day. A welcoming reprieve from the past two days at work, filled with broken style pipes, fire safe doors, frustrated tears, and frayed tempers…
